Nathan Sawaya, an internationally renowned LEGO brick artist returns to Agora Gallery. This exhibition features his new work and demonstrates for the first-time the artistic shift that Sawaya has experienced. The sculpture is still surrealist in its appeal, but the artist claims that his work is “the antithesis to my previous work.” It’s an introspective show. My work is done with an unconventional medium. It’s like being in a prison.
Nathan Sawaya works with more than 1.5 million LEGO bricks in his studio. He says that he sometimes sees the world as little rectangles at this stage of his career. The work is so attractive because of the unusual medium. The bricks’ structure lends an appealing quality to the pieces. Although each block is a solid mass, when viewed in its entirety the pieces look smooth and delicately finished. They are only visible close up.
